"Blackout periods" are blocks of dates, usually around holidays or peak season, when no discount travel is available.

If taking the Inca Trail, and after the fourth day, the first ruins you will encounter will be those of IntiPuncu, known as the 'Gateway to the Sun'. IntiPuncu is about an hours walk from Machu Picchu, and is located in a notch in a ridgeline which allows the morning sun to stream into the ancient city. Buried deep within Peru almost 2,500 meters above sea level, amongst lush, almost virginal landscape, sits Machu Picchu, fortress city of the ancient Incas. Machu Picchu had remained lost for centuries and remained undiscovered by the Spanish conquistadors. It wasn't until 1911 that lost city was discovered by an American archaeologist and politician named Hiram Bingham (1875-1956), who travelled to Peru on an expedition sponsored by Yale university.

Le Jardin des Plantes is a stone's throw from the Notre Dame La Grande. Le Jardin des Plantes lies in a quiet, botanical setting and boasts a glass-house. Travel by foot to the other side of the town centre, and you'll come to the much larger Parc de Blossac with it's high walls affording a wonderful view of the surrounding area. The Parc de Blossac also has several animal enclosures. La Roseraie is another garden dedicated to 461 varieties of rose beds, as well as a diverse variety of trees.

Le Lude - The best 'son et lumière' show this writer has had the pleasure of attending was at the Château du Lude, situated in the small town of Le Lude on the south bank of the Loir river, not far from the town of La Flèche. The son et lumière show, entitled 'Sumptuous Nights on the Banks of the Loir' (les glorieuses et fastueuses soirées au bord du Loir), is an unforgettable experience.

The Château de Blois has a rich history of intrigue, and different wings of the building were built over several centuries ranging from the Feudal period (13 C), to the Gothic-Renaissance transitional period (late 15, early 16 C), to the famous 'François I' wing built in the Renaissance period between 1515-1524, to the Gaston d'Orléans Wing constructed in the Classical period 1635-1638.

Azay-Le-Rideau - Built between 1518 and 1529, this Château was the creation of a leading financier of the time, Gilles Berthalot. His wife, Philippe Lesbahy, directed the work. The state has owned it since 1905, and it is presently decorated with fine furniture and Renaissance and 17C tapestries. This Château is a true work of elegance and is situated in a tree clad setting on the banks of the Indre river.

If you vacation there in the summer months, then during the evenings many of the Châteaux also play host to 'son et lumière' (sound and light) shows, where historical events are depicted and played out by locals dressed in period costumes. Some are most elaborate, involving casts of several hundred people as well as 'chevaliers' on horse back.
